Second Collection:
Next weekend’s (2/12/12) Second Collection is for Fuel Offering
Ignation Lenten Series:
Beginning on the First Sunday of Lent, February 26, and continuing on the next four Sundays of Lent (March 4, 11, 18 and 25), a presentation of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola will be given at 3PM here in our parish.
Ignatius wrote these Exercises during a nine-month period of intense prayer and penance at the little town of Manresa, Spain, in 1522, when he was in his early thirties, and he continued to work on them throughout his life. Today we are all familiar with programs of physical exercise to improve our physical health. Ignatius’ Exercises are a four-week program to improve our spiritual health. The weeks can be shortened or lengthened, depending on the needs of the one making them. Ignatius understood spiritual health to be freedom from any attachment which would prevent a person from committing himself or herself to the will of God. So spiritual freedom , understood as a person’s ability to live the first and greatest of commandment, is the aim of his Exercises.
Our presenters will be four Jesuits and one sister. Fr. Kenneth Hughes, S.J., and Sister Nancy Sheridan, SASV, will present the first two weeks of the Exercises on February 26 and March 4. On March 11, Fr. Richard Roos, S.J., will speak on Ignatius’ famous Rules for Discernment. On March 18, Fr. Charles Healey, S.J., will speak on the Third week of the Exercises, and on March 25, Fr. William Russell, S.J., will speak on the Fourth Week.

Our special thanks to Samantha W., a student at Mt. St. Charles who independently collected food for Bryan’s Pantry, collecting food through friends of the North Stars Hockey Team. From Fr. Finnegan's Desk:
Dear Parishioners,
On Tuesday, the 31st of January, there was a picture in The Providence Journal of Margherite Garrahy and her son John greeting those who came to offer their condolences at the wake service which preceded the funeral Mass for the former governor at the Cathedral on Monday, the 30th of January. Both mother and son are holding a man and woman who are offering their sympathy. The son is looking at his mother in a way which shows his admiration for her, and she is smiling at the woman she is greeting. It all seems so real and kind. Both mother and son seem to be such genuine people. And, apparently, that reflects the life and career of the man being commemorated, Governor Garrahy. Most of the parishioners here at St. Charles are long-time, even life-time, residents of Rhode Island and therefore will remember the time when Joseph Garrahy was the governor. I do not. But the little that I have read in the paper about him these past few days gives me the impression that he was an honest man, indeed, an honest governor. At a time when we so often read about those who have abused their public office, it is very refreshing to read about such a man. It would not be out of order to utter a prayer of thanksgiving to God for his service and example, as well as a prayer of petition that others will be inspired by his example to serve state and country with integrity.
Members of the same family can differ in their political views. Under one roof there can be diametrically opposed views on who is the best candidate for the different parties and who would make the best president or governor or mayor or representative. But we can all agree on the importance of taking our own citizenship seriously by studying the candidates and the issues and then by voting. That is the least we can do. Beyond that we might ask ourselves if we should not be more active on the local level and perhaps even beyond that.
Good citizenship is not a lucky-strike extra for us as Catholics. It is part of our job description. It is the living of the two great commandments, love of God and love of neighbor, applied to our actual lives. Sometimes we forget that.
