KING, REVEREND DONALD J., 94, Pastor Emeritus of St. Charles Church, Woonsocket died on Thursday, March 29, 2007.
Born in Providence, son of the late Sylvere J. and Grace G. (Hourahan) King, he attended Holy Name School and LaSalle Academy, Providence.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Holy Cross College, Worcester, MA; St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD; and at Catholic University, Washington, DC. He was ordained a priest on May 22, 1937 at the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul, Providence, by Bishop Francis P. Keough.
After a summer assignment at St. Philomena (now St. Thomas More) Church, Narragansett (1937-38), Father King served as assistant pastor at St. Margaret Church, Rumford (1938-43); St. Joseph Church, Providence (1943-49); St. Mary Church, Warren (1949-51); and St. Teresa Church, Pawtucket (1951-63). In February 1963 he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Victory Church, Ashaway, and transferred in 1966 to St. Charles Church, Woonsocket where he remained until his retirement in 1983 as Pastor Emeritus.
In addition to his parochial duties, Father King served as Dean of the Woonsocket Deanery, and as a member of the Council of Priests and College of Consultors for several terms. He was also elected to the Clergy Benefit Committee, and was president of the Senior Priests' Association. Likewise, he was Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus and a Friar of the Fourth Degree Team.
After his retirement from parish administration, Father King continued to give priestly ministry at several parishes while living at St. John Vianney Residence, Providence. In later years he resided at the Saint Antoine Residence, North Smithfield.
Father King leaves a sister, Helen A. Gallogly of Warwick; a niece, Mary Ann Scott of South Kingstown; a nephew, Paul A. Gallogly, and his wife Moira, of Warwick; three grand nieces and one grand nephew. He was the brother of the late Edward J. King of Providence.
His funeral was held on Monday, April 2, at 9 a.m. from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of his soul at 10 a.m. in Saint Peter's Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Visiting hours are Sunday 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Saint Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
